According to Chess.com, Shevchenko aroused suspicion when he began spending long periods away from the board during the opening rounds of the tournament. According to a statement by Chief Arbiter Óscar Bruno de Prado Rodríguez, a mobile device was later found in a toilet cubicle, alongside a note in a script similar to the 22-year-old's handwriting, Chess.com reported.

Why would a player be permitted any time away from the board in a tournament game? It's not a rule that you have to stay at your table until a match is complete?Or do matches go 6, 8, 10 hours?

Once you get to grandmaster tournaments, it's the length of an MLB game, with all the excitement there in.

Then I'm even more surprised. If it's 2.5 - 4 hours at the most and a game that is 100% mental exercise, I am flabbergasted players are permitted to get up and leave the table or take bathroom breaks.

Games can go 3-4 hours, depending on the timing rules for that tournament. But there will usually be a restroom located close enough to the playing area that it can be monitored, either by officials or by cameras. It sounds like that wasn't the case here and he tried to cheat with one of the laziest methods because he thought he could get away with it. What an idiot.

I agree he's an idiot --noticeably long periods of time away? lol -- but sounds like the tournament organizers were also idiots for leaving the restrooms unmonitored.

I mean, really. Just seems like such an obvious detail.

Not gonna lie, last time there was a major cheating scandal I ended up looking up a bunch of chess and that lead me to discover that chess streaming is a thing, and I appreciate that.

I am still not any good whatsoever at chess.

They should use the same technology American schools use to monitor bathrooms.
